yuletide recs [28 Dec 2009|03:44pm]

It's entirely possible I've been sucked into an alternate universe where I take time to update LJ from work. Thoughts?

Anyway, I have to complete a position paper before a 5pm conference call (afterwhich I will jet off to see "Up In the Air"). To motivate myself I am posting Yuletide recs because yesterday's opportunity to read fic was PURE JOY. I loved stumbling on stories in fandoms that I didn't even know have fic like Apollo 13 RPF or Billy Elliot.

6 Yuletied recs:

  • Apollo 13 RPF: Cross Section. Gen. Summary: The book's been published, the movie's being made, and Jim's caught somewhere between reality and memory. This fic felt special which isn't a word I tend to use when describing fic. It's all about the making of Apollo 13 form Lovell's POV and it feels just right.

  • Appaloosa: A Veneer Upon the Surface. Cole/Hitch. "It was like the routine found us. I did what he said, he A lovely fic set just prior to the beginning of the film. This hit the spot. I was really hoping for some Appaloosa fic again this year.

  • Billy Elliot: A Lovely Trick. Billy/Michael. Billy Elliot fic! November of Billy's second to last semester at Royal Ballet and Michael comes to visit. It's a pitch perfect story that builds on the wonderful friendship the boys shared in Everington. Only now they've grown up a bit.

  • Big Bang Theory: The Wolowitz-Koothrappali Consummation. Howard/Raj. "Oh my God," Raj says. "Leonard's mother was right." This is spot on characterization and exactly how Howard and Raj should make sense of things.

  • Big Bang Theory: The Cheap Trick Acceleration. Sheldon, Penny. Sheldon + Penny + time travel + Sheldon!Prime + Road trip = awesome, awesome BBT fic.

  • Breakfast Club: Most Likely To. Brian/Bender. Summary: People liked stories to have a trajectory. Upward or downward, they liked a journey. So if there had been gossip after the reunion, Brian's life might have looked something like this. This is one hell of a Breakfast Club fic - possibly my favorite so far. It's set in the future from Brian's POV as he looks at the difference between easy perceptions of his life and the reality he's living. Bender is fantastic here.

    Back to work for me!

reading wrap up [27 Dec 2009|06:21pm]

I just caught up on the Glee season finale. &hearts &hearts &hearts I loved the whole thing but my favorite, favorite bit was Rachel signing "Don't Rain on My Parade." I will happy argue that Lea Michele sings the best version of the song since Barbara. The woman can sing and, with Streisand leaving her mark on the song, she had to be crazy confident to tackle the song on tv like that. She nailed it. (Here's a link to the audio.) I bought the Glee 2 sound track and haven't checked the track listing yet. I hope it's on the CD! ETA: It is! Can you wear out a CD track?

I set a goal of reading many books in 2009. I didn't target a specific number because I didn't want reading to become pressure and I landed at 24 books - fewer than I expected but still almost a book every other week. Quite frankly, I'll be amazed if I can keep that pace in 2010. Something to strive for, for sure.

The books I read and some thoughts about them )

I can't possibly pick a favorite from that diverse group of books but the one that will stay with me the longest is Columbine. I thought about that book for weeks after I finished (and devoured it in one day). I encourage everyone to steer clear of Shiver and Her Fearful Symmetry. Yikes. More thoughts are also on Shelfari here.

I currently have 15 or 16 books sitting in a pile waiting for me. I keep saying that I'll stop buying books until the pile shrinks but I can't seem to pass up new books! Maybe a good goal for 2010 is better work/life balance and more time for me. Right now, I'm dreaming of sitting the cruise ship desk with the sun on my face, a drink in one hand, and a book in another.

I'm dreading work tomorrow but hoping (against all futile hopes?) that it will be an easy productive day. Regardless, I'm seeing "Up in the Air" tomorrow night. It's movie season!

the many loves... [27 Dec 2009|01:29pm]

Hello! Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!

Life remains hectic and fun. On Christmas Eve I took my first turn at cooking sea bass made all the better for the fact that I had to create a marinade with only the contents of Jason's fridge and pantry. Hahahaha You'll have better luck with that at my house which is saying a lot. On Christmas Day we saw Sherlock Holmes with friends and then all did dinner together. (On Holmes - Gay, Gay, Gay. Also AWESOME. Where is the fic?) Yesterday we got in a looooooong shopping trip to prep for the cruise. This morning was time on the treadmill and boot camp because cruise = bathing suits.

The purpose of this post, though, is that I just learned there is a Warren Beatty bio coming out on 1/12! Of all things, I stumbled across the news on my company's intranet as I sat here pulling up our 2010 fiscal calendar. Warren Beatty bio!! \o/

In other news, I have to find time to read Yuletide fic. Maybe I'll print some out for the cruise. [info]carta sent me the link to an Appaloosa fic that wet my appetite.
